Co-Managed IT Services for Internal IT Teams

Your team keeps what it does well. We take the rest. Co-managed IT services pair your internal IT staff with AIS engineers, a 24/7/365 monitoring platform and a help desk that answers, so your team stops firefighting and starts finishing projects. AIS delivers co-managed IT services from Indianapolis to organizations across Indiana with one to ten internal IT people who are carrying more than the headcount supports.

Short answer: Co-managed IT is a shared-responsibility model. Your internal team owns what it chooses to own, typically business applications, end-user relationships and strategic projects. AIS covers the rest: monitoring, patching, help desk overflow or after-hours coverage, security operations, backup, vendor management and the engineering depth you only need sometimes. The split is written down, reviewed quarterly, and changes as your team changes.

What is co-managed IT, and how is it different from fully managed?

Fully managed means AIS is your IT department. Co-managed means AIS is part of it. The difference is not the tooling or the service levels, which are the same. The difference is who holds each responsibility.

In a co-managed agreement we document every function in your environment, assign each one to your team or to AIS, and put a name next to it. Nothing falls between two chairs because nothing is left unassigned.

Who co-managed IT is for

Organizations with a capable internal IT team that is permanently underwater. The signs are familiar: projects that have been on the roadmap for two years, a help desk queue that resets every Monday, one person who cannot take a vacation, security work that gets done after an incident instead of before one, and an IT leader spending their day on tickets instead of on the business.

If any of that sounds like your Monday, co-managed is the honest answer. If you have no internal team at all, fully managed IT services are.

What AIS takes on in a co-managed agreement

The split is yours to set. These are the pieces most co-managed clients hand to AIS first:

  • Monitoring and alerting, 24/7/365, with ticket triage so your team wakes up to a summary, not a pager.
  • Help desk overflow, after-hours and onsite coverage, so your people stop being the only line.
  • Patching, endpoint management and server lifecycle work across Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Cisco, Meraki and Veeam.
  • Managed Cybersecurity: security awareness training, email and content filtering, dark web monitoring, and the option to add Managed Detection and Response.
  • Backup and disaster recovery, tested on a schedule, with the results in writing.
  • Vendor management, so your team stops being the go-between for carriers, ISPs and software vendors.
  • Project engineering capacity: migrations, network refreshes, Microsoft 365 security hardening, delivered alongside your team rather than instead of it.
  • vCIO access for roadmap, budget and risk conversations with leadership.

What your team keeps

Whatever you decide. Most internal teams keep line-of-business applications, the relationships with department heads, local onsite presence, and the projects that define their roles. Many keep tier 1 help desk and hand AIS tiers 2 and 3. Some do the reverse. The point of the model is that your best people spend their time on the work only they can do.

How a co-managed engagement starts

Every co-managed engagement starts with a documented environment review: what you run, who touches it, where the gaps are, and what keeps your IT lead up at night. From that we build the responsibility matrix, agree the service levels, connect your environment to our monitoring and documentation platforms, and introduce your team to the engineers they will work with. Most clients are fully onboarded in 30 to 45 days. The responsibility matrix is reviewed every quarter.

Why Indiana IT teams choose AIS for co-managed IT

AIS has been serving Indiana businesses since 2012 from our Indianapolis headquarters at 8801 N. Meridian St. Our engineers hold the same certifications your team does, and we treat your internal IT lead as the client, not as an obstacle.

Co-managed is how most of our mid-market clients start, and the model is built so your team gets stronger, not sidelined. See how it works for a managed IT services client in Indianapolis or anywhere across Indiana.

Frequently asked questions

What does co-managed IT cost compared to hiring?

Co-managed agreements are priced per user or per device with the responsibility split reflected in the rate, so you pay for the coverage you hand over rather than for a full-time hire. We quote after the environment review so the number reflects your actual split.

Will AIS replace our internal IT staff?

No. Co-managed exists so you can keep your team and give them capacity. If a client’s goal is to eliminate internal IT, fully managed is the right model and we will say so.

Who do our users call?

That is one of the first decisions in the responsibility matrix. Some clients route everything to the AIS help desk with escalation to their team; others keep tier 1 in-house and escalate to AIS. Either way, users get one number.

Can we change the split later?

Yes. The responsibility matrix is reviewed every quarter and can change at any review. Teams grow, people leave, priorities shift, and the agreement moves with them.

What are your support hours?

Monitoring runs 24/7/365. The help desk is staffed Monday through Friday, 8am to 6pm Eastern, with 24×7 help desk coverage available as an add-on.

Do you work with our existing tools?

Yes. We support Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, Cisco, Meraki, Veeam and most common line-of-business platforms, and we document in a shared system your team can read and edit.
